BEHIND-THE-SCENES honours at Newmarket's mammoth fete and carnival on August Monday went to an American Staff Sergeant and the Red Cross. Bumper holiday crowds a the Town Grounds sw the American seviceman dash from a fire-fighting display with his arm and part of his clothing covering in blazing petrol. He was Staff-Sgt. F Master of Newmarket. His wife and three small children were at the display. When 500 gallons of paraffin and oil failed to light satisfactoily for the display put on by a section of Lakenheath U.S.A.F. fire brigade Sgt Masterwalked around starting fires with a can of petrol. DANGEROUS Well aware of the dangers of an explosion when the can caught fire, he attempted to extinguish the blaze which threatened the crowd of hundreds standing nearby. In the attempt his clothing caught fire and had to be smotheredby people watching the display. Sgt Master was rushed to the Red Cross tent manned by local men and women volunteers' to have the agonising burns claeaned and dressed before being taking to the American Infirmary at Lakenheath. The petrol can bla was extinguished with foam and the display, which had been dogged by bad luck from the stsrt, was completed succeefully - without a fire.
